Police in Essex are investigating the attempted theft of a cash machine from the Aldi supermarket.

The incident happened at around 1.15am this morning at the store on Reid Road.

Police received reportst that a silver Land Rover Defender, which had been stolen from an address in Silver End, had driven into the entrance of the Aldi store.

Two men dressed in dark clothing with their faces covered forced entry into the store by smashing the window and made an unsuccessful attempt to remove the cash machine from the premises.

The two men then got back into the vehicle and drove off with a silver VW Gold in the direction of the town centre.

The Land Rover was later found on fire outside White Notley Football Club on Church Hill in Faulkbourne.
