Proposals to turn the former Odeon cinema on Major’s Corner in Ipswich into a new centre for the Hope Church look set to take a big step forward next week.

The proposal is due to be discussed by members of the borough council’s planning and development committee – and officials are recommending that it is approved with certain conditions.

The plans include having church auditoria on the ground and second floors of the former cinema – in two of what were the largest cinema screens – and using other screens as meeting rooms, children’s areas and other space associated with church activities.

When the plans were formally lodged with the borough last month, Hope Church Elder Tom Scrivens said they hoped to complete the work by the summer of next year.

There would be no change to the outside of the building which is in good condition despite being unused for 13 years.
