A Colchester gym has been given a helping hand to open its newly refurbished facilities – by an Olympian.

Racewalker Dominic King was at Activa gym at Leisure World Colchester earlier today to reopen the site after months of major improvement work.

The gym underwent an extension to its current area and studio space, while the spinning room was also refitted.

The space has been increased by 243sqm, with dedicated areas now available and updated cardio equipment.

King, who was born in the town, has competed for Great Britain in the London 2012 Games and at the Rio Summer Olympics.

He has also been in two Commonwealth Games and uses the gym for his strength and condition training.

Councillor Annie Feltham, Colchester Borough Council portfolio holder for commercial services, said: “We are very proud of Leisure World and the excellent facilities that our centre provides for residents and visitors.

“The outcome of this investment will ensure that the quality of the facilities, especially the gym, is of the highest possible standard. Members can now benefit from the new equipment and greater space that will mean many more people can be accommodated during peak times.”
