A group of film-lovers are bringing the magic of the big screen to an intimate setting at the heart of a Suffolk village.
The Town Hall Cinema has been set up in Orford to revive the early spirit of motion picture - now largely confined to the screens of giant multiplexes.
The not-for-profit venture launched with a showing of rom-com favourite When Harry Met Sally, followed by rags-to-riches fairytale Slumdog Millionaire.
On Friday, March 7, the town hall will again be transformed for the presentation of timeless classic Casablanca.
The volunteer-led project’s Frances Brennan said: “We want to offer a diverse selection of films that appeal to people of all ages and interests.
“There is a unique atmosphere to community cinema. The social side of watching films seems to be strengthening again, with small screens popping up all over the place.”
Screenings are planned for the first Friday of each month at the hall, which used to show films in the past and still houses a projectionist box, now used as a newspaper kiosk.
The organising group, which has about 12 members and meets monthly, pays a fee for the right to show each film. It also belongs to the British Federation of Film Societies, which supports community cinemas.
Film officer Pat Hood said the group hopes to soon begin showing local documentary films as part of an evening’s screening.
Doors open for Casablanca at 6.30pm on March 7. Tickets are £5 and film-goers can sign up for membership to the cinema group on the door.
