The streets of Colchester will clatter with the sound of horses this weekend, but not the traditional kind.
The first-ever full race card of seven pantomime horses will trot along the town’s closed High Street, starting at 10.45am on September 17.
The event - organised by Age Concern, Colchester - is called Auld Nag’s Folly and features seven races followed by supporting entertainment at 3pm.
Jonathan Moore, race secretary for Age Concern Colchester, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed with the enthusiasm and imagination put in by our teams. We have the Bobbins, Brown Velvets and more usual nag’s names, through to Zimmer, Sir Culver Baldrick the Third, Pantomoose, Did Not Run to mention just a few.
“We are particularly grateful to the local Rotary clubs who have really taken the cause to heart – Rotarians joining a real cross mixture of people volunteering as stewards, panto horse wranglers and more.”
Visitors will also be able to select the colour of their favourite horses and cheer them home as part of a raffle.
The event is free to attend.
