AN “extremely large” number of pupils from a Suffolk high school have been off sick this week, prompting staff to send out personal hygiene advice to parents.

Parents of pupils attending Hartismere High School in Eye have been sent an email asking them to reinforce advice about hand washing after many pupils were kept off school with a range of symptoms.

The message read: “Please be aware we have an extremely large volume of pupils absent at present with symptoms of high temperature, sore throat and sickness.

“The school nurse recommends that all children are reminded of the importance of regular hand washing using soap and drying their hands with paper towels to minimise the spread of infection - please reinforce this message at home.

“We are also advised, that with regard to sickness, pupils should only return to school once they have been symptom free for 48 hours.”
