Staff from a Glemsford company rolled up their sleeves to spruce up an outdoor learning area at the village's primary school.

The team from Philips Avent took on the work at Glemsford Primary Academy – clearing the space of brambles and weeds, repairing and painting the fence and gate, making a wildlife area and laying a patio.

Ben Jeffery, headteacher, said: “I am extremely grateful for all the hard work that the team from Avent did.

“Our outdoor learning area was beginning to look a bit tired but now it looks brilliant and I hope the relationship between the school and Avent will continue to develop.”

Mr Jeffery said the outdoor area is used for forest school lessons where children learn how to build shelters, work as a team and make fires.

The patio was laid in an area of the school field called the story garden where the children can relax and unwind at lunchtime and read.

This is the second time staff from the company have helped out at the school, with a team doing similar work a year ago.

Neville Kent, senior supply chain manager at Philips Avent, said: “Philips have a great policy on volunteering and we encourage everyone to participate, in line with the company focus on health and wellbeing.

“I am very passionate about our fantastic local community in Glemsford. So when the management team met to discuss the next activity, I jumped at the chance to suggest Glemsford Primary Academy.

“The school is such an asset and we wanted to find a way to improve the pupils’ environment to explore, learn and develop.

“I hope our modest efforts have, in a small way, made a difference.”
