A HERD of Suffolk pigs did a runner when the lorry transporting them to a bacon factory overturned.
The impact of the crash, close to the Malton Bacon Factory in North Yorkshire yesterday, forced the doors open and most of the pigs escaped, according to reports.
Another 40 were trapped inside the vehicle and firefighters had to use cutting equipment and spray them with water to keep them cool.
Police blocked off the road and entrances to other factories while workers from the slaughterhouse rounded up the animals. About 40 animals had to be put down by vets.
It is not known exactly where the herd was originally based.
The lorry driver, also believed to be from Suffolk, was not hurt in the crash.
