A singer who once rivalled Elvis Presley has cancelled a Lowestoft gig after claiming he only wants to date underage girls.

PJ Proby - who enjoyed success in the 1960s - was due to play at the Marina Theatre on May 9, but has been forced to call off the show following comments made while promoting his nationwide tour.

The 80-year-old, whose remarks focused on a lust for girls under the age of 16, subsequently cancelled the entirety of his UK farewell due to the severe public backlash.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror ahead of the tour, he said: “I won't marry a girl I can't raise from the age of 12, 13 or 14. I like that they're young and fresh-looking and don't come with baggage – nobody's messed with their heart and broken it.

“They're still in school so I can have a hand in their education and make sure their grades are all right, make sure the way they think about religion is all right, and what is and isn't proper.”

“The last lady in my life was Elizabeth Conway in 1997,” he said. “She was 13 when I met her. I don't think there'll be another because it's against the law.”

Mr Proby's comments prompted cancellations from the Forum Theatre in Billingham, Teeside, and the Lyric Theatre in Carmarthen, Wales.

Solihull Council followed suit by scrapping his show at The Core Theatre, before the remainder of the 20 tour dates across the country were all cancelled.

A spokesman for the Marina Theatre confirmed Mr Proby's scheduled appearance in Lowestoft next month would not take place.

The singer, who hails from Texas but lives in Worcestershire, has denied ever dating underage girls, highlighting that his three marriages were to women who were 16, 17 and 21 at the time.

But he confessed dating agencies were unlikely to accommodate his preferences, adding they would “get in trouble if they looked for a girl of the kind I'm looking for.”

Mr Proby has since sought to clarify his comments, saying he “does not lust for young girls” and “simply fell in love with all the girls I wed”.

He added that the interview “does not reflect the truth whatsoever”, but was “true in stating I would only marry a younger girl.”
