Police are appealing for witness following a fatal crash involving a cyclist in Colchester last night.

The incident took place in Harwich Road, in Elmstead, with police called shortly after 8pm.

They were responding to reports of a collision between a vehicle and a cyclist.

Officers believe the cyclist was struck by a car, which then left the scene.

Despite paramedic and police attending, they died at the site of the crash.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said they were called at 8.07pm last night to a serious road traffic collision in Bromley Road – part of the same stretch of carriageway as Harwich Road.

They added: “An ambulance and an ambulance officer attended the scene.”

Following the crash, police have arrested a 71-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision.

He currently remains in custody.

Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident, and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward or anyone who may have captured the crash on dash-cam footage.

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01245 240590 or email collisionappeal@essex.pnn.police.uk.
