A MAN has died and a teenage girl is fighting for her life after a car accident in Chelmsford today.

A motorist was arrested on suspicion of drink driving following the collision on the A1016 Three Mile Hill at just after 10am.

Police said a black Mitsubishi Shogun estate and a green Fiat Punto were both travelling in the direction of the A12 when they collided and the Fiat hit the central reservation.

The driver, a 61-year-old man, died at the scene of the accident and his teenage passenger was flown by air ambulance to Whitechapel Hospital in London with serious head injuries.

Her condition was described as “critical.”

The pair were believed to be from the Witham area but police are yet to release the dead man's identity.

The Mitsubishi driver, a 34-year-old man from the Stanford-le-Hope area, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and has been released on police bail without charge until June 22 pending further enquiries.
