A man was taken to hospital with potentially life threatening injuries after his car collided with a tree and caught fire.

Suffolk police are appealing for witnesses to the crash which occurred in the village of Assington, between Colchester and Sudbury, on Saturday, December 1.

At around 7pm a black Mini Cooper was travelling in a southerly direction on the A134 between Sudbury and Colchester when it collided with the tree on the A134, just south of Assington Lane.

Firefighters were also called to the site of the crash shortly after to rescue the man who was reportedly trapped in the now burning Mini.

The man was cut free from the car and taken to Addenbrooke’s hospital by air ambulance crews after paramedics had treated him.

An ambulance spokesman said: “An ambulance, two ambulance officer vehicles and East Anglian Air Ambulance were called to the A134 near Assington, Sudbury shortly after 7pm on Saturday December 1 following reports of a road traffic collision.

“A man was transported by air ambulance to Addenbrookes Hospital, with serious injuries.”

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have any information regarding the way the vehicle was driven in the lead up to the crash.

Police are especially keen to view any dashcam footage from the area.

Anyone with any information should contact PC 1349 David Green of Bury St Edmunds Roads and Armed Policing Team.
