A 29-year-old man from Braintree suffered a broken jaw and had his teeth knocked out after he was attacked at about 4.40am yesterday.
The man was taken to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, but has been unable to give a statement to police yet.
It is believed the man, who was in fancy dress, and his superhero friend had been to a fancy dress party earlier in the evening.
Officers have said they are keen to speak to the witness who was dressed as Superman and was with the victim when the assault took place in the Coggeshall Road and Marks Farm roundabout area.
Police are hunting for four men who assaulted the 29-year-old.
