Detectives have managed to identify a man found dead at the side of the road in Woolpit two days after his body was discovered.

Police were sent to the village at 1.50pm on January 1 to reports a body had been found at the side of Elmswell Road.

Detectives now believe they know who the man is and formal identification procedures are underway.

A post-mortem is due to take place on Friday.

As an investigation into the man’s unexplained death continues, police are issuing a further appeal for witnesses.

Detectives are urging anyone with information about the discovery to come forward.

A police spokesman said: “Officers investigating the circumstances are keen to hear from any witnesses who may have any information that could assist.

“The deceased man is described as white, elderly, approximately 5 foot tall with short, fair hair, clean shaven and wore a hearing aid.

“He was wearing a green coat and black jogging style trousers with dark shoes.”

Elmswell Road is now back open after police searches caused it to close for approximately 48 hours.
