Man threatened with handgun and kitchen knife during Colchester robbery

The victim was walking in Greenstead Road, near the junction of Tabor Close, between 10.30am and 10.45am on Tuesday, January 8 when he was approached by two men.

They threatened him and stole cash before trying to force him into a small white van.

The victim was able to leave the scene unharmed but was left shaken by the incident.

Essex Police have released descriptions of the men they believe were involved in the incident.

One of the suspects is described as being white, in his early 40s, and was wearing a black hooded jacket with the hood up.

He had visible stubble and was around 6ft tall of broad build.

He threatened the victim with a kitchen knife.

The second man, described as being white, aged in his late 30s and around 6ft tall was armed with what is believed to be a handgun.

Tim Young, deputy leader of Colchester Borough Council and council member for Greenstead ward, said the incident was “out of character” for the area.

“This is a very rare occurrence,” said Mr Young, “I am quite shocked to see this incident has taken place.

“It’s quite out of character.”

Mr Young said the area had a good community spirit despite being one of the most deprived areas of Colchester in terms of statistics.

“I think there will be a great deal of shock in the community and I know people will want to come together.

“I would appeal to the local community to get in touch with the police straight away.”

DC Tim Harris, of Colchester CID, said: “This is an incident of concern.

“Thankfully, reports like this are rare and our victim is physically unharmed, and we are working to understand the circumstances surrounding this theft.

“I would urge anyone with information, has CCTV in the area or may have been driving past and has CCTV footage available to view to call Colchester police station on 101 quoting the crime reference number 42/4339/19.
