A fire which destroyed 21 vehicles at a car dealership in Bury St Edmunds is not being treated as suspicious, police have said.

Fire crews were called to the Hammond Nissan dealership in Lamdin Road around 4am on Thursday, October 4, and spent more than an hour and a half battling the blaze.

The cars went up in flames at the back of the compound and nearby residents reported seeing plumes of smoke rising from the site, before fire fighters extinguished the blaze at 5.48am.

It is still not known exactly what caused the blaze following an investigation by the fire service.

A joint statement from Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service and Suffolk police said: “An investigation into the fire carried out by the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has resulted in the cause being undetermined.

“Following enquiries by Suffolk police, the fire is not being treated as suspicious at this time.”
