Extra police patrols will be carried out in Colchester over the next two nights after a spate of four knife-point robberies – including one in which a gang of up to 15 men surrounded a victim.

The incidents happened on Friday night, and the additional patrols will now take place in The Hythe and Newtown as a result.

Police were called to the first incident in Hickory Avenue shortly before 11pm. A man was approached by a group of around 10-15 men who surrounded him.

One of the men produced a knife and demanded money from the man. The victim pushed the suspect and ran away. Nothing was stolen and no one was injured.

Officers were called to a second incident in Hythe Station shortly after 1.30am on Saturday morning. Two men who were with two women approached a man and pulled out a knife. The men stole a wallet and a phone. No one was injured.

A third incident took place shortly after 2.15am in Winnock Road. A man was approached by five or six boys and had his phone stolen at knife point. No one was injured.

A fourth incident took place shortly before 2.30am when a man was approached by men holding a knife. He pushed the man away and ran from the scene.

Detective Chief Inspector Leighton Hammett said, “We have a zero tolerance stance on this type of behaviour and these incidents are not acceptable.

“Our detectives are working with the victims in each incident to identify the suspects involved.

“There will be dedicated patrols in these areas over the weekend to ensure the safety of the community.

“If anyone sees anything suspicious or has any information please contact Colchester police station on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
