It’s always a big day in a youngster’s life when they meet a member of the royal family and it was children from the Leiston area who back in 1983 had the privilege of meeting and performing for Princess Margaret.

The princess – the Queen’s sister – visited Leiston Abbey, the spectacular ruins of which date back to the 12th century and stand on the edge of the town.

The Pro Corda Trust, a centre which provides for and conducts the education of young people and others in the whole art, philosophy and theory of music, particularly chamber music, set up in 1969, purchased the abbey site in 1977 for its home.

It is managed by the trust, while English Heritage are the guardians of the abbey remains.
