A NEW leisure centre in a Suffolk town has been given a Royal seal of approval.

Princess Anne carried out the official opening of the multi-million pound facility in Exning Road, Newmarket yesterday.

HRH The Princess Royal met school children from the town during her tour of the leisure centre and unveiled a glass plaque to officially open the building.

Malcolm Smith, chairman of Forest Heath District Council, joint partners in the centre alongside Anglia Community Leisure, said: β€œIt was a wonderful occasion and experience for the people of Forest Heath and our users of the leisure centre.”

The Royal guest - the Queen's only daughter - was greeted by civic leaders on her arrival before she was shown an aqua gym session and a disabled swimming class in the two pools.

Princess Anne also watched an athletics coaching session involving 20 year four pupils from Laureate Primary School and Newmarket College students taking part in a dance class.

A posy was presented to HRH Princess Royal after the plaque unveiling by 10-year-old Sophie Tuite from All Saints Primary School.
