A PRISONER who climbed on to the roof of Chelmsford Prison to mount a protest was talked down by professional negotiators today.
The man climbed on to the roof at around 11.30pm and kept up his one-man protest for more than five hours.
A Home Office spokesman said: “At 4.50pm the prisoner was negotiated down.
“This was an excellent example of joint working between the prison, the fire service, police and ambulance.
“The Prison Service is pleased the incident ended peacefully and safely.”
Fire crews helped in the incident. Assistant Divisional Officer Neil Fenwick, of Essex Fire Service, said: "This was a multi-agency effort which came to a successful conclusion.
"We have devised plans and carried out training exercises on scenarios like the one dealt with today and that planning and training paid off with today's positive outcome."
The man was brought down from the roof with the help of the fire service's aerial ladder platform.
