The winners who tracked down all of the 18 stunning artworks in the World War 1 Trail, in Bury St Edmunds, have been presented with their prizes.
The competition involved seeking out the poignant pieces that were on display around the town from the beginning of the school summer holidays until Armistice Day, on November 11.
A top prize of £100 in vouchers was presented to Linda Hoggett with four further prizes of £25 in vouchers and five prizes of £10 vouchers donated by OurBuryStEdmunds, the business improvement group in the town centre.
Thousands of people visited the town to find all or some of the unique pieces, which were all made by local artists, with more than 500 correct entries submitted.
The initiative was organised by OurBuryStEdmunds in partnership with and raising funds for the Every Heart Matters appeal, which is co-ordinated by the My WiSH charity which supports the West Suffolk Hospital. It was also sponsored by Bury St Edmunds-based Treatt.
Mark Cordell, the chief executive of OurBuryStEdmunds, said: “Many of the artists involved had also participated in our Wolf Trail three years ago which was a huge success. However, the stories behind these works of art were so special and moving that it was a wonderful way to commemorate such an important piece of history and I’m very pleased that so many people took the trouble to seek them all out.”
Sue Smith, head of fundraising at My WiSH, added: “It’s been lovely to hear from the prize winners how much they enjoyed discovering all the different works of art.
“The trail was so well received, which was our intention, and I hope that people who fell in love with some of the pieces will now bid for them when they are auctioned.”
The artworks are all due to be sold on Saturday, December 15, between 1pm and 2pm, in a Fine Art and Antiques sale at Lacy, Scott and Knight, with the proceeds going to the Every Heart Matters appeal which is aiming to raise £500,000 for a new cardiac diagnosis centre at the hospital.
