Firefighters freed a racehorse who was stuck in a horsebox in Newmarket this evening.

Two fire vehicles from Bury St Edmunds and one from Newmarket attended the incident at Barbara Stradbroke Avenue around 7.15pm following a call from a vet.

On arrival, crews found the animal half over the partition of the horsebox and a decision was made to sedate it and transport it in its box to the Newmarket Equine Hospital.

At the equine hospital, a joint risk assessment with the fire service and the vet took place to find the best way to free the horse.

Cutting equipment and animal rescue equipment was used and the horse was safely released at 8.30pm and left in the care of veterinary staff.
