Pressure group Railfuture is pressing for trebling in the number of trains between Ipswich and Cambridge when the new East West Rail project is completed over the next 15 years.

At present there is one train in each direction an hour – stopping at most of the stations and taking 78 minutes to complete the journey which is slower than using the A14.

However a study by Atkins Consultancy has proposed that there should be three trains an hour – two of them stopping only at Stowmarket, Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket allowing them to complete the journey in just under an hour. The third would operate on the current timings stopping at all stations.

The East Anglian branch of Railfuture has backed the plans and will campaign to ensure they are included in the final plans for the East West Rail project which are due to be published by the end of this year.
