Many said they heard or saw nothing of the incident except blue flashing lights which disturbed their evening while others were answering their doors to police who were carrying out their inquiries.

The attack took place around 10pm, on Tuesday, in Short Brackland, a stone’s throw from where the last sighting of missing RAF serviceman Corrie McKeague was recorded.

The road was closed for around an hour and Suffolk police said the victim was being looked after by officers shortly after the attack while their investigation continued.

Joanna Clark said she was shaken but not surprised by the incident as she had witnessed distrubances in the road before.

“It’s not far from where Corrie McKeague was last seen which is slightly disturbing and there’s always trouble in the street,” she said.

“I saw a police car outside my house as I was going to bed and saw it’s blue light flashing and my little dog was fussing so I knew something was up.

“They (police) appeared to get here quite quickly and I got a knock on the door and was asked a few questions and I think the attack took place halfway down the street.”

Andy Cross said: “I did not hear anything at all as I went to bed quite early.”

And Russell Holtaway said he was called to his front door by police.

“I heard a bit of shouting but I didn’t see anything,” he added.

While across the road in nearby Well Street, Holly Hayhurst said she also saw the blue flashing lights but did not see anything.

“I have a big dog but he did not make any noise which I would have expected if there was any disturbance. But to hear about the attack in such a quiet area of the town is disturbing,” she added.

Another resident said he also answered the door to police.

“But I could not help them really, however, it was a big shock to hear of the incident and it sounds horrific if six people attacked just one man. I wonder what it was all about?” he asked.

Meanwhile, Suffolk police said they were continuing their inquiries into the incident and anyone who can help them with their inquiries can contact them on 101.
