The number of complaints against police has returned to normal levels following a sudden 26pc spike.

Recorded complaint cases against Suffolk police went from 152 between April and September, 2016, to 191 during the same period of 2017.

The figure amounts to the highest number of complaint cases recorded in the first two quarters of the last 10 years.

The largest percentage increase was 50% – recorded between 2012 and 2013.

Most complaints were made for reasons of ‘other neglect or failure in duty’.

Chief constable Gareth Wilson told an accountability and performance panel meeting: “No apparent incidents have generated multiple complaints and no officers have attracted unduly numerous complaints, but there appears to be a small number of complainants making multiple complaints.

“Numbers returned to normal in October and November.

“It’s something we will continue to monitor.”
