Southwold Boating Lake is to benefit from the grant through the Coastal Revival Fund after being identified as a significant element in the town's heritage, tourism and wildlife.

The lake, which dates back to 1900, has provided a hub for boating and model yachting for generations.

Councillor Michael Ladd, Waveney District Council's cabinet member for economic development and tourism, and chair of the Coastal Community Team, said: 'This funding is great news for the team and will allow the project to take a step forward, with the identification of future development and investment options for the whole of the boating lake site.

'We are particularly keen to focus on green tourism and something which can be enjoyed by visitors and the local community throughout the year.'

The lake, which is owned by Southwold Town Council, is rich in biodiversity and presents a unique opportunity to create sustainable tourism, council bosses say.

The vision will incorporate all of the 20 acre site, including the tearooms to the front, the model yacht pond and the large lagoon area at the rear which encompasses an area of rich natural habitat.

The importance of the boating lake was highlighted in the Coastal Community Team's Economic Plan, which was published in June 2017.

With the funding boost, a feasibility study will be carried out to assess and appraise various options available, as well as considering how signage could be improved to direct people to the lake and to other destinations in the town.

Formed in 2017, the Coastal Communities Team includes representatives from Southwold Town Council, Reydon Parish Council, Southwold and Reydon Society, Waveney District Council and other key business and community figures.

The project will be managed by the town and district councils.

A spokesperson for Waveney District Council said: 'This fund is intended to help improve the economic sustainability of coastal assets and coastal communities more broadly.'
