THE first meeting of Gordon Brown's new Council of Regional Ministers was held today, with the main emphasis focusing on the financial turmoil.The council brings together the nine English regional ministers appointed by Mr Brown in his recent Government reshuffle, together with the Secretaries of State for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

THE first meeting of Gordon Brown's new Council of Regional Ministers was held today, with the main emphasis focusing on the financial turmoil.

The council brings together the nine English regional ministers appointed by Mr Brown in his recent Government reshuffle, together with the Secretaries of State for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The meeting was co-chaired by Cabinet Office Minister Liam Byrne and Treasury Minister Angela Eagle, who was standing in for Treasury Chief Secretary Yvette Cooper who is at the EU summit in Brussels.

The East of England's minister is Barbara Follett - MP for Stevenage and minister of state in the department for culture, media and heritage.
