They came in all shapes and sizes and all age groups ... some dressed to impressed others in their team colours.
And at the end of their 24-hour efforts it amounted to an amazing £26,000 being raised for Cancer Research.
A total of 412 people took part in the 10th annual Relay for Life, held at Nowton Park, in Bury St Edmunds, last Saturday and Sunday, with 73 of them being cancer survivors.
The mayor of St Edmundsbury Margaret Marks set them off at noon with a host of teams and individuals on the route which featured an array of music and entertainment to help particpants on their journey.
Matthew Darkins, the co-event chair, said a target of £33,000 was set and it’s hoped to reach and even beat that figure over the coming weeks and months.
“We completely took over the park for the weekend and it was amazing.
“It was a totally brilliant event and was such fun and we are so happy how everything went and could not be more pleased with it.
“Every year we have beaten the number of cancer survivors we have and this year was no exception.
“Many participants were our family and friends who have been touched by this awful disease and their involvement was proof that together we can all make a difference to find more effective screeing and treatments to fight all types of cancer.”
A total of 24 teams made up the relay with the biggest group of 34 being Haverhill Slimming World.
Jannies Army won the Relay Trophy for capturing what the event was all about with 17 in their team and entertainment was provided by Ella Rose, Freestyle, Jo Brown Zumba, Kuk Sool Won Bury St Edmunds, Lift Choir, Linton Jazz, Silvermist Majorettes, St Edmundsbury Male Voice Choir, piper Stuart Jones, Suffolk Phoenix Marchers and the Dinosaur Band.
There was themed laps throughout the 24-hours focused on a variety of topics including Christmas, Halloween, bedtime, dog walking, egg and spoon and the crazy hat lap.
The survivors lap of honour started off the event and the Candle of Hope Ceremony took place as dusk fell on the Saturday with 534 decorated and personalised candles bags handed out, all lit in memory or in celebration of someone special to those taking part in the relay.
