Cancer survivor urges others to join Colchester’s Relay for Life
A Colchester grandmother-of-nine who survived a rare form of breast cancer is urging others to join her at this year’s Relay for Life fund-raiser in the town.
Shirley Maulding, 53, was diagnosed with bi-lateral breast cancer two years ago but was treated successfully with surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
She had two different types of cancer on each side of her body, one of which was triple negative, which is particularly aggressive and difficult to treat.
She will lead a lap of honour at the event.
Shirley said: “I am thrilled to be part of Cancer Research UK’s 7th Relay For Life in Colchester and I feel honoured to be taking part in the ‘Lap of Honour’ with fellow cancer survivors and celebrating our achievements.
“Cancer affects so many people every year.
“I want to raise awareness too, particularly around triple negative breast cancer and Relay For Life is a great way to make a stand against the disease by raising money to fund Cancer Research UK’s life-saving research.”
Cancer Research’s Relay for Life, which takes place at Colchester Garrison’s athletics track on Saturday, July 27, and Sunday, July 28.
To date, the event has raised more than £180,000 for the cancer charity.
During the Relay, team members take turns to walk round a track while everyone else enjoys the carnival atmosphere.
As the event continues non-stop through the night, team members not on the track rest, eat, or sleep in their tents, which are set up close by.
As dusk falls, the atmosphere quietens as a Candle of Hope ceremony begins.
Specially made Candle of Hope bags, decorated with messages in memory of or in celebration of loved ones, are filled with sand and lit up with candles around the track.
Kate Richardson, volunteer chairman of Relay For Life in Colchester, said: “We are delighted to have someone as positive as Shirley to lead the lap of honour. She is an inspiration to everyone who meets her.
An open evening is being held on January 23 starting at 8pm at the Colchester Garrison Athletics Track Clubhouse on Circular Road North where you can find out more about getting involved in the community event. Everyone is welcome to attend.
