Firefighters were called to a horse trapped neck deep in a water filled ditch in Harp Lane, Clare.

Emergency services were called shortly after 5pm to the ditch close to Clare football ground, where the horse was trapped.

One crew from Clare, a water rescue unit from Bury St Edmunds and a unimog 4x4 vehicle from South Woodham Ferrers in Essex were called, and a fire crew on arrival unsuccessfully attempted to free the horse by looping a 70ml hose underneath it to try and pull it free.

A local resident then helped to rescue the animal by using a 4x4 vehicle to pull the horse free with a winch and strops, while waiting for the arrival of the unimog.

The horse had been freed shortly after 6pm.
