Archaeological findings at the site of a new £40million hub project in west Suffolk will be revealed to residents next week.

Suffolk Archaeology has been carrying out work at the site of what will become the Mildenhall Hub, which is scheduled to open in 2020.

The project in Sheldrick Way will deliver a new school, new leisure facilities – including a swimming pool and gym – as well as a health centre, public library, pre-school and adult learning space.

Residents are now being invited to view and discuss some of the findings on tours of the archaeological dig site on Tuesday, September 18, between 5pm and 7pm.

Rhodri Gardner, managing director of Suffolk Archaeology, said: “While the hub is very much about the future of Mildenhall and meeting the future needs of the residents that live in and around the town, this has been a fascinating dig with golden glimpses into Mildenhall’s past.

“While we don’t want to give too much away ahead of the community evening, we’re really looking forward to sharing our discoveries with local residents.”

Students from Mildenhall College Academy helped start the dig at the end of June.

James Waters, leader of Forest Heath District Council, said: “We, and our partners, are delivering better facilities for the people of Mildenhall and the surrounding area.

“Even if we spent millions repairing them, the existing facilities we have are not fit for purpose – times have changed.

“Instead we are investing in something that is unique, ambitious and exciting – and that in years to come we will look back and feel proud of.

“This is about us and our partners delivering integrated, accessible services that are better suited to the needs of our local residents and are more resilient to the financial challenges that we anticipate we may all face together in the future.

“We are the pioneers and I believe that The Mildenhall Hub will become the model for how many other towns and cities provide schools, leisure and public services in the future.”

Those attending the community evening at Mildenhall College Academy are advised that the tour will be entirely outdoors.
