The most popular baby names for 2016 in England and Wales have been revealed with Olivia and Oliver being ranked as the number one choices.

The data, released by the Office for National Statistics, revealed that Olivia and Oliver are the most popular baby names of 2016.

Olivia replaced Amelia which had occupied the top position for five years.

Olivia came out top in five out of nine regions across England, and in Wales - the name was also top in 2008 and 2010.

Oliver has now been in the number one spot for four years in a row - the name was most popular in six regions in England and in Wales.

Muhammad replaced William in the top 10 names for boys last year, while Poppy dropped out of the top 10 for girls, making way for Lily.

Four new entries have entered the top 100 girls’ names these are Felicity, Iris, Luna and Lydia.

They replaced Bethany, Hollie, Katie and Lacey which were there in 2015.

New entries in the top 100 boys’ names include Albie, Arlo, Ezra, Finn, Jasper and Jesse which replaced Callum, Connor, Jamie, Kian, Seth and Sonny which were in the top 100 in 2015.

There were 696,271 live births recorded in England and Wales in 2016.

The statistics are based on names first recorded at live births which occurred over 12 months.

A total of 64,000 different names were given to babies in 2016.
