A ROAD was closed last night as fire crews tackled a blaze in a derelict building that had gas cylinders inside.

Four fire engines attended the incident, in Fornham Road, Bury St Edmunds, at about 7pm and spent more than three hours bringing it under control.

Firefighters from Bury St Edmunds and Ixworth had extinguished the blaze by 10.30pm but were due to re-inspect it later in the evening.

Police were also called amid fears of a possible explosion involving the gas cylinders.

But the firefighters were able to bring the situation under control without any residents being removed from their homes, according to a police spokesman.

The road was closed while crews dealt with the incident. The cause of the fire is unknown.
