A road outside RAF Mildenhall's main gate blocked by a two-car accident early this morning has reopened.

Drivers faced lengthy rush hour tail backs after the crash close to RAF Mildenhall closed the busy A1101, which runs beside the base.

The drivers of the Renault Clio and Honda Prelude involved in the accident, which happened at just after 7am, suffered minor injuries. One suffered minor back injuries and the other neck pains but neither was thought to have needed medical attention.

However, a police spokesman said the smash had caused considerable damage to the cars involved and the wreckage blocked the road. Diversions were place but motorists heading to work in icy conditions - some reports had temperatures in the Mildenhalll area down to minus 10 degrees - were warned to expect delays.

He said Suffolk police and military police from RAF Mildenhall were involved in dealing with the accident. It was not known what caused the collision. The road was cleared by just before 9am.
