Calls have been made for urgent action to end the misery caused by the “significant and inappropriate” number of lorries using a narrow lane in a Suffolk village.

Central Suffolk and North Ipswich MP Dan Poulter said he had witnessed first hand the problems caused by heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) using Town Lane, Wetheringsett, to reach a business in the area.

He was concerned the number of HGVs had increased dramatically in recent months, becoming “significant and inappropriate”, and “causing considerable distress and disruption to neighbouring residents and properties”.

The road is barely wide enough for a lorry and a car to pass and not wide enough for two lorries to pass. At peak times, according to residents, lorries can be forced to queue on the roadside, causing further disruption.

Dr Poulter said that earlier this week police were called as lorries attempting to pass had become grounded and the road became impassable.

Residents were unable to get through and further lorries were stacked at the roadside as attempts to recover the stranded vehicles were mounted.

The road itself has become pitted and damaged through constant use by HGVs and the roadside has become “dangerously eroded” in places.

Dr Poulter said drivers and residents were growing increasingly concerned about the potential for a serious accident.

He said: “After meeting with the parish council and concerned residents, I am very worried by this unacceptable increase in lorry movements on this particularly narrow road.

“En route to the meeting, I witnessed first hand the perilous nature of trying to navigate around these massive vehicles, struggling to avoid the sharp gulleys which have been cut into the highway through excessive weight and traffic movements.

“I have asked the appropriate authorities to step in and work together to bring an end to this intolerable and, quite frankly, dangerous situation and I will be calling a summit meeting to get everyone round the table over the coming weeks.”

A Suffolk County Council spokesman said: “We have been informed of the problems along Town Lane in Wetheringsett and we would be happy to attend any round table discussion.”
