A runner was attacked in a wooded area near Foxhall Stadium near Ipswich over the weekend, sparking concern among residents.

The incident happened at 9.15pm on Saturday when the victim was out alone near to the Kelvedon Drive area.

Police said he was approached by an unknown man who then assaulted him with what is described as a sharp weapon, causing a cut across his stomach.

The runner, in an attempt to defend himself, received cuts to his hand and elbow. He attended Ipswich Hospital for treatment and was released later that night.

The description of the offender is currently limited to only that he was wearing dark clothing.

One concerned resident said: “It’s a very popular path for runners and dog walkers – it links Brendon Drive and Foxhall Road and is a lovely area to run in.

“It’s a huge shock to hear of something like this happening. While it was late to be running down there, some runners will wear head-torches if they’re out at night. I hope he makes a quick recovery and they catch whoever was responsible.”

And Suffolk Coastal District councillor Stuart Lawson, who represents Kesgrave West, said he was shocked and mystified by the unwarranted attack.

He said: “It’s a big shock to hear of something like this happening but I just hope the victim makes a full recovery and the police are able to catch the offender.

“I would have had a heart attack if I had seen something like this taking place and I’m just glad that he was able to get his injuries dealt with.”

Debbie McCallum, who is the landlady at The Bell, in Kesgrave and Suffolk Coastal District councillor for Kesgrave West, added: “For something like this to happen so close to us I find quite astonishing and worrying as we have quite a few runners about here.

“The time it happened is not too late although it’s dark and I cannot remember anything like this happening in the area as it’s so close to us here. I hope the victim can get over his injuries and that they catch the culprit.”
