A HEADTEACHER has today vowed to make improvements after a critical Ofsted report downgraded her school from “good” to “requires improvement”.

Inconsistency in pupils’ progress in writing and mathematics and teaching in nursery and reception is not challenging enough were some of the criticisms levelled at Broke Hall Community Primary School during November’s inspection.

Inspectors graded the school in Rushmere St Andrew as “requires improvement” having been ranked as “good” during a previous visit.

Headteacher Jenny Barr, who joined the school in September, said: “Whilst it is disappointing that Ofsted came to the conclusion it did, we accept the report and will work on the issues within it.

“Prior to the inspection we had already recognised some key areas we needed to address and are already making good progress – the inspectors recognised the impact of this recent work.

“The report states that ‘pupils’ recent work indicates that teachers have increasingly high expectations of the quality, quantity and presentation of written work’.”

Despite the criticisms, inspectors also praised the teaching of reading, the provision made for disabled pupils and that pupils are proud of their school, feel safe and are well behaved.

Mrs Barr added: “Our children continue to attain significantly above the national average.

“In a recent league table for Suffolk primary schools, we were in the top 15 per cent with 91pc of our children achieving Level 4 in both English and maths.

“We have every confidence that the actions that the school are taking, supported by a committed staff and governing body will ensure the school will be judged ‘good’ by the next inspection under the current framework.”
