Two people had to be led to safety after fire took hold of the first floor of a property in Saffron Walden.
A man and a woman, both in their 40s, were given oxygen therapy following the blaze in Hamilton Mews at about 12.20am today.
Two crews from Saffron Walden and one from Newport were sent to the scene and they used two hose reels to tackle the blaze, which was extinguished by about 1.20am.
The cause of the fire is unknown. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service and police are carrying out an investigation.
