A MARKET town is gearing up to celebrate England’s patron saint.

Saxmundham has a whole weekend of activities planned to mark St George’s Day.

It kicks off on Friday, April 19 with a quiz at 7pm in the Market Hall. Tickets are available from HG Crisp in Saxmundham High Street at £6 per person, for teams of six people. The entry fee also includes a glass of wine and light refreshment.

The fun continues on Saturday at 9.30am until 1.30pm in Fromus Square, which is just off the High Street. Admission is free and there will be music, a barbecue, Punch and Judy, a bouncy castle, archery sessions and other games and stalls. Shopkeepers are also taking part in a “best dressed” window competition, with visitors encouraged to “spot the odd item”. Entry forms from HG Crisp, to be returned by April 19.

On Saturday evening there is a dinner dance in the Market Hall, starting at 7pm with food served at 7.30pm. Tickets are £15, which includes a three course meal and music from The Topless Barmaids.

Celebrations culminate on Sunday with the High Street closed to traffic from 9am to 5pm for a charity fair and pony and trap rides.

A civic parade will meet outside The Store in High Street at 2.15pm and proceed to Fromus Square for a service at 2.45pm. It will be followed by tea at the Market Hall, provided by the WI.
