Sea search off Essex after distress flares spotted in sky

A lifeboat was launched after two reports of red flares off the Essex coast.

Thames Coastguard received the reports at 8.40pm last night in the Brightlingsea area.

Officers tasked Clacton Coastguard Rescue Team, Mersea Coastguard Rescue Team, Clacton RNLI Lifeboat with support from Essex Police to search for persons in distress.

A spokeswoman said the area was searched fully with nothing untoward found.
