A burglar has been jailed for two and a half years after he was identified by DNA found on a water bottle left at the scene of the crime.

Sean Cawthray, 47, currently of HMP Leicester, broke into a house in Windmill Lane, Tiptree, between 8am and 9.30am on Friday, July 7 last year.

During the road he stole items including clothing and jewellery worth more than £1,000.

Cawthray was disturbed by the home owner as he fled the property and brandished a kitchen knife before retreating into nearby woods.

The victim found a water bottle at the scene which was not there before the burglary.

A test revealed the bottle had Cawthray’s DNA on it.

Officers from Essex Police interviewed him in prison on September 13, 2017 and he was later reported for process.

He appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday, September 24, and pleaded guilty to the burglary and to possession of a bladed article in a public place.

A charge of aggravated burglary will remain on file.

Cawthray was sentenced to 18 months for the burglary and 12 months for possession of a bladed article with the sentences to run concurrently.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Danielle Markoutsis, from Colchester CID, said: “Sean Cawthray has little respect for other people’s property.

“He had the audacity to break into the victim’s home in broad daylight and seemingly had few reservations about taking items which had a great monetary and sentimental value.

“He did at least admit his crimes and I hope this sentence brings some solace to the victim.”
