A SECTION of the one of the region's busiest roads will be forced to close for more than 30 hours while a temporary steel bridge is put into place.

Work has been ongoing on the B1508 bridge over the A12 between Colchester and West Bergholt since it was given high priority by Essex County Council after it failed a structural assessment last year.

The Highways Agency is due to move the temporary replacement – work on which began yesterday - over the busy road this weekend to allow strengthening work to be carried out on the existing structure.

Putting the 67-metre span bridge into place will force the A12 to close between the A133 Spring Lane interchange to the west of Colchester and the A120 Crown interchange to the north east.

The delays will follow months of misery for drivers heading in and out of town on the B1508 after temporary traffic lights reduced the road to a single lane when the structural failure was discovered last September.

The road is due to shut at 10pm on Saturday and re-open at 5am on Monday.

Project manager, Brian Pitkin, apologised to residents who will be affected by diverted traffic passing their homes.

He said the use of the temporary bridge would prevent the need to close the B1508 for lengthy periods.

"We are carrying out the work over a weekend when traffic flows are at their lowest in order to minimise disruption.

"However, I must apologise to people living in Colchester on the diversion route who will have extra traffic going past their properties.

"We will open the A12 as soon as possible in order to cause as little disturbance as possible."

During the work at the weekend, traffic will be diverted on to the A133 Ipswich Road before returning to the A12 at the Crown Lane interchange.
