A SUFFOLK town has been hit with a second serious sex attack in just two weeks after a 34-year-old woman was indecently assaulted.

The woman was walking from a friend's house through an alleyway when she was approached by a man who put his hands up her top and indecently assaulted her.

Police were called after residents heard the woman's screams in the alleyway, which leads to allotments at the back of Burton End in Haverhill.

When officers arrived they found the woman sitting on the ground. She told officers she had been indecently assaulted before she struggled free and the man left.

Acting Det Insp Jerry Hoy appealed for information about the incident, which is thought to have happened between 1am and 1.15am yesterday .

He said: "House to house enquiries are being carried out and we would like to hear from anyone who may have been in the area around 1am.

"Did you see the woman or anyone else in or near the alleyway? If you were there you may have information that can help."

The man has been described as taller than 5ft 8ins with a stocky build and clean shaven. He had short hair pressed up at the front and he was wearing a shirt, of thicker material than a T-shirt, and long trousers.

The incident would have sent shockwaves through a community still reeling after the rape of a 25-year-old woman in St Mary's Churchyard on August 11.

The victim told police she had woken up at about 5am having been raped in the early hours.

Police, who have not ruled out the possibility that date rape-style drugs may have been used ahead of the attack, last week questioned more than 400 people in the area in their hunt for the rapist.

The attack was the fourth rape or attempted rape in the town in little over a year.

On May 17 last year a man attacked a woman at knifepoint at Burton End Primary School in Haverhill He forced her to the ground and attempted to take down her trousers but she scratched and bit the man and he fled.

A woman in her 40s was also raped on the town's Clements estate in October, while one month later a man was allegedly raped in the Jubilee Walk area of Haverhill.

Anyone with any information about this latest incident should contact Haverhill Police on 01473 613500.
