Smith, who first joined his hometown club in 1996, hasn't raced this season and will make his return at Berwick on Saturday.
Sheffield owner Neil Machin said: “Scott's excited about riding for us and it's ironic he makes his return at his former club on Saturday. He can do well for us.”
