The Shotley Pier Group overseeing the restoration of the historic structure is set to benefit from more donations after being awarded charitable status.
The HMRC approved the legal charitable status on the group in January, which means that it can now benefit from Giftaid donations, increasing the amount raised by 25p in every pound.
It also means the group will not need to pay VAT on some purchases.
Sally Chicken, vice-chairman of the group, said: “HMRC has stringent rules to ensure that these tax perks are used appropriately, and we are delighted that we qualify.”
The news comes as the heritage project has been boosted by a further £10,000 investment from Power to Change – an organisation which helps grow and support community businesses.
The fund will be used to help plan the renovations over the next three-five years for the historic pier.
