BOOKS signed by disgraced Tory peer Jeffery Archer are being sold in a charity shop near the prison where he is spending his last days of freedom.

At least two copies of Lord Archer's A Prison Diary FF8282 book, signed by the author, have arrived at the Oxfam shop in the Thoroughfare, Woodbridge, close to Hollesley Bay open prison where he is an inmate.

One of the books has already been bought by an unknown buyer and EADT reporter Richard Smith bought the second for £40 yesterday.

The book was originally priced at £50 but was reduced to £40, and had been on sale in a locked cabinet for five weeks.

It was sandwiched between The Vision of Hell and The Vision of Purgatory and Paradise - two volumes written by Dante 100 years ago – and a signed copy of golf star Nick Faldo's video, which was reduced from £19.99 to £9.99.

The book was signed 'Jeffery Archer' and was the only book by the author in the shop.

Archer, 62, is due to be released from the prison at 9am on Monday after completing exactly half his four-year sentence for perjury and perverting the course of justice.

It is not known when or how the Archer novels arrived at the charity shop.

A spokeswoman for Oxfam said: "We sold a book, possibly two, by Jeffery Archer which were signed."

The spokeswoman added that it was not known what was written in the books or how many came in.

Archer performed one of his last duties at the open prison yesterday when he delivered books to fellow inmates.

The author has worked in the prison library since he was transferred last October to the seaside jail nicknamed Holiday Bay because of its lax regime.

He was spotted yesterday afternoon strolling into a wing carrying a plastic bag full of books and gripping two paperbacks - one of them the novel Charlotte Gray by Sebastian Faulks.

One prisoner said: "I know it is stating the obvious - but he is really looking forward to being a free man again.

"I know life in here is easy - but he can't wait to get home to his family. He is a popular guy in the prison and we will all miss him."

He was due to entertain around half a dozen prisoners last night at a "farewell" party in his first floor cell in the prison's Bosmere unit.

But the event was set to be different from his famous parties in his London penthouse where he used to entertain top politicians and celebrities with his trademark Shepherd's pie and Krug champagne.

Archer was due to supply his fellow inmates with soft drinks and a selection of snacks like cakes and biscuits bought from the prison shop.

The former Tory party deputy chairman is preparing for the publication next week of the second installment of his prison diaries.

The first volume, published under his prison number FF8282, was subtitled Belmarsh: Hell because it detailed his stay at the tough London prison immediately after he was jailed in 2001.

Archer has told fellow prisoners that the second book will be given the subtitle "Purgatory" and will tell of his stay in medium security Wayland Prison in Norfolk and move to North Sea Camp open prison in Lincolnshire.

He is already understood to have finished writing his third prison diary book detailing his time in Hollesley Bay and subtitled Heaven. It is set to be published later this year.

A source at Hollesley Bay said: "To be fair he has done a lot to get prisoners interested in reading. The library is now busier than it ever has been - and it is not just because inmates want to see him in there.

"He has helped prisoners write letters and has talked to anyone wanting advice. He is a very clever man and inmates respect what he has to say."
