An absconder from an ‘open prison’ in Suffolk has appeared at a Manchester court charged with burglary.

Simon Knights, 42, of no fixed address, failed to return to Hollesley Bay prison in east Suffolk after being granted temporary licence to go to an address in Newhaven, East Sussex, on Thursday, March 22.

He was reported missing to police after failing to return by 4pm on Monday, March 26.

Knights has now been been located in Greater Manchester, where he has been charged with burglary and absconding from lawful custody.

The burglary charge related to an incident shortly after 3.15pm on Wednesday, August 22, when police were called to reports of break in at a property on Bramhall Lane South in Stockport.

Officers attended and immediately searched the house after a man had smashed through the back door. The offender had fled the scene prior to police arrival.

Knights appeared at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, August 22.
