A sinkhole opened up in a road in Clacton this morning.

The cause of a sinkhole that opened in Clacton this morning is currently unknown.

Highways teams at Essex County Council were alerted at 10.40am to a hole estimated to be one metre square and around 2m deep in Wellesley Road.

The road is expected to remain closed throughout the weekend, between Pier Avenue and Alexandra Road. It has caused minor disruption for most of today.

An Essex Highways spokesperson said: “We are aware of a road surface defect on Worsley Road and our maintenance crew has attended the scene.

“The cause is currently unknown and the road is expected to remain closed throughout the weekend while investigations continue.”

Earlier, a spokesman from Essex County Council said that the sinkhole could have been caused “where material under the road has been washed away, by a leaking sewer or water of some sort.”
