Firefighters spent more than 12 hours monitoring a large haystack blaze near Halstead today.

Around 60 tonnes of hay caught fire in a field in Burton’s Green Road, Greenstead Green, shortly before 1.30am.

Two crews from Braintree and Halstead attended the incident and kept an eye on the blaze throughout the night to ensure it was burning safely.

At 7.30am, it was reported the stack had been reduced by half and around 30 tonnes of hay was still burning. The fire was expected to burn itself out in around eight hours.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service left the scene at 3pm.
