Firefighters worked overnight to quell the flames of a blaze involving 500 tonnes of straw on farmland between Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the fire following reports of smoke seen billowing across the A14, near junction 45 for Blackthorpe and Rougham.

A total of six fire crews attended the scene of the fire, off Elderstub Lane, after initial reports came in just after 11pm on Saturday night.

Firefighters from stations in Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Wickhambrook, Ixworth and Long Melford tackled the flames into the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket crews remained on scene past dawn to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

A fire and rescue service spokesman said the fire involved 500 tonnes of straw.
